Has anyone figured out a way to open a link from one page in a new tab?
I can't figure the point of having tabbed browsing if each tab has to be opened and operated separately. 

I personally like tabs as it eliminate having a separate instance of the program running hence less resources used. I agree, too, that all browsers are tab oriented now and the default settings are geared to that end. Thankfully, you can change the browser behavior to use windows instead of tabs if you so desire with many of these browsers (SM and FF for sure).

My goal in replying was to support what can be done and not to complain. I have used browsers long enough to see the changing trends of usage and design. That said, I am not a big fan of the minimalist approach being utilized by FF and Chrome. SM has always been a faithful browser which I am switching back to today - been using FF and TB as the sync software for my PDA does not support SM.
