Step by Step DETAILED Guide to adding custom ringtones to your Alltel LG Tritan AX840

So you went out and bought what you thought was an awesome phone, only to discover that you can’t seem to find a way to personalize your ringtones without buying them from Alltel. Sound familiar? Are you annoyed yet? I was FOR SURE! BUT where there is a will there is a way. After scouring the internet for hours and hours I could not for the life of me find one good “how to” on this subject. Bits and pieced and many many sites later (not to mention a lot of trial and error) I came to a final solution that worked. I know many ppl out there are just as frustrated as I was so I decided to make a detailed step by step guide to help the rest of you along. Please understand that modding your phone can be a bit tricky and I take no responsibility if you decide to follow my instructions..do so at your own risk. Also - Thanks to the many other people that had already figured some of this info out (I dont take credit for it, I'm merely organizing it and updating it for what worked for me)

First the bad news (more you say?) you WILL need a micro sd card! My pc did not even show anything was plugged in until I installed mine. After calling LG I was told there can be no transfer of info without it. Good news is they start at under 10 bucks for a 2gig chip at Wal-Mart. You can install up to a 16 gig chip.

Once this is installed (just insert). You will have to download a few files before you begin.
Installing Drivers

1)   Go to http://www.colordrives.net/LG7000%20Driver.zip and download this     driver. It is not necessary to install the whole thing.

2)   Open with winrar or winzip.
3)   Drag the folder that matches your operating system to your desk top.
4)   Plug your data cable into your phone and then into the usb port on            your computer.

5)   Choose “USB Mass Storage”
This will set up your SD Card for use with your phone.
When finished touch exit on your phone.
6)     Disconnect USB cable from PC and then reconnect.
7)   On your phone choose the option “USB Modem”
A window should come up asking you for a driver. (I assume here that you know  how to install a driver onto your pc *crosses fingers*)

8)      Point it to the folder containing the drivers that you placed on your desktop.
9)      Do this several times until it tells you that your device has been installed and is working properly. Double check that everything is working properly by going into your system properties and making sure that nothing has an ! next to it.

Installing Bitpim
Next you will need a small program called Bitpim
1)   Go here to download. http://sourceforge.net/projects/bitpim/files/bitpim-tests/1.0.7.20090805/bitpim-1.0.7.20090805-setup.exe/download

2)   Install the program.
3)   Start Bitpim
A window should come up that says “Found other CDMA phone” Make note of the COM# (depending on your pc set up this can vary)

4)   Click Edit on the top tool bar
5)   Click Settings
6)   Click the Phone Wizard button
7)   Choose Alltel – LG – VX9700 (Dare) then Next
8)   Click the COM# that it told you in step #3 above
9)   Click the Detect Phone button (it will probably fail ..but that is ok)
10)   Click Finish
This will take you back to the main screen of BitPim

11)   Click View on the top tool bar, then click View File System
12)   You will notice that this puts a File System Icon on the left column at the bottom

13)   Click the File System Icon
14)   In the second column over you will see a file with a + next to it, Click the + (this expands the folder) It SHOULD say retrieving and then a large list of folders will appear. This is the contents of your phone. Tamper with this at your own risk.

15)   Click on the folder named dload
16)   Right click “mysound.dat”
17)   Choose to save this file to your desktop
18)   Then delete the file from the dload folder in Bitpim
19)   Expand Brew
20)   Expand Media
21)   Expand lk
22)   Click on the ms folder
23)   In the right most column you will see all of your ringtones that are on your phone.
24)   Drag any mp3 ringtone that you have to this list and Drop (you should see it appear in the list) *note midis and wavs may work .. Im not sure because I haven’t tested this
25)   Exit Bitpim
26)   Unplug your phone
27)   POWER DOWN your phone and then POWER BACK UP.
28)   Your custom ringtones should now be listed with the rest of the ringtones on your phone.

I know this seems like a lot and it kinda is the first time through (since you have to install the drivers and all). Good thing is BitPim remembers your phone and the next time all you have to do is start it up with your phone attached to your PC and begin at step #13.
Also it is very easy to make your own ringtones from any mp3 that you have. I recommend using an audio editor (I like audio edit deluxe). You can cut just the part of the song you want for your ringtone (I prefer to keep mine under 15 seconds but hey that is up to you) Good Luck!!
**PS this is my first time posting like this so if this post is not in the right place or not done properly please forgive me lol

Opps one minor correction! I said that after completing this process the next time you do it begin at step #13, this is correct HOWEVER you do NOT need to preform steps #15-#18 again (just skip directly to step #19) Smiley

I posted this info awhile ago but yours is more detailed.

However you DON'T need an sd card as I did mine without one.
When you plug in the phone it will ask "usb modem" or "Mass Storage"
just hit cancel.

That is interesting Siacono, and I did try it without it, but I did not get any prompt to install my phone (my computer did not recognize that anything was even plugged in). Without installing the drivers, Bitpim would not retrieve the data on the phone either. Maybe that could be due to different operating systems? I use Windows XP.

I don't know if I even needed to download the drivers.  I plugged in my phone, did the "mass storage" then went on to the "USB modem" step and it automatically installed it right away without ever asking me anything except to click "finish" cause it was already installed. (I have windows XP)  Thanks for the great write-up though.  I'm so stoked that I can put free tones on my phone now.

I tried deleting some of the ringtones to make room, but for some odd reason when unplugged turned the phone off and turned it back on.. they were still there....

I bought 3 credits but everytime I would try and purchase something... it said I couldn't because not enough room on my ringtones... but after I deleted about half of the lame ringtones, it STILL said not enough room! So I gave up...

As an update to the op... I just installed a .mid and it works just fine so i would assume .wav does too

EDIT: just added a .wav file and it works as well.

I hate  to jump in a thread late, but all I did was get an SD card on my recently purchased phone. I'm running XP. The drivers all downloaded automatically.

I just dragged and dropped the wallpapers, ringtones and 1 gig of music into the appropriate files that are made on the SD card. The phone recognized them all.

Hope this helps

So simple, thank for the info. It worked like a charm. I put the ringtones in the audios folder and the wallpaper in the image folder on my sd card. Then I transferred them to my phone's internal memory.

Neither of ya'll have Alltel...
Alltel has locked out custom ringtones.

I have tried this procedure on my phone several times on different computers with no success.  The files transfer, are still there after reboot, but do not show up anywhere when browsing on the phone.
